Und stolz erhebt er noch einmal
das Haupt und zuckt vor Schmerz
und seufzt und sinket schlaff und fahl
an seines Dieners Herz.
Der drückt die Augen, so lind er kann,
ihm zu mit harter Hand
und trägt auf seinen Schultern dann
hinab ihn an den Strand.
Er setzt die Toten steif und blaß
an Bord mit Schild und Speer,
die glotzen da wohl grimmig und graß
hinaus ins dunkle Meer.
Er setzt den König auf dem Verdeck
mit Speer und Schild zu Thron,
als zieh er, wie sonst der Feinde Schreck,
zu Schlacht und Sieg davon.
Er steckt den Bord in hellen Brand,
er hißt die Segel auf
und läßt dann los von finstern Strand
das lodernde Schiff zum Lauf.
Es schweift hinaus, und strahlt und blinkt
noch her aus weiter Fern',
bis mit dem Helden es untersinkt
wie ein verlöschender Stern.

and carries on his shoulders
him down to the shore.
He seats the dead, stiff and pale
on board with shields and speers,
with a grim and horrid look they face
out onto the dark ocean.
He seats the king onto the top-deck
mit speer and shield onto his throne,
as if he was setting out as the enemy's bane
to war and victory.
He sets bright fire to the ship
and sets the sails
and lets from the dark shore
the burning ship sail out.
It trails off and glows and sparks
even from far off
until it sinks with the hero
like a dying star.
